Does FIRST Improve College Acceptance?

Studies have shown that participation in FIRST Robotics can enhance your child’s chances of being accepted into college many ways. One benefit is that involvement in FRC provides students with valuable hands-on experience in robotics, programming, and engineering. These skills are especially important to colleges with strong STEM programs. Additionally, FIRST Robotics encourages the development of leadership skills, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities. All of which are highly valued by college admissions committees. Participation also allows students to showcase their passion for STEM and their ability to apply classroom knowledge to real-world problems. In fact, one Ivy Scholars student who participated in FRC was able to draw from his experiences for his college essay. He used specific examples to highlight his growth and dedication. Through opportunities like these, FRC not only fosters academic and personal development, but also gives students an edge in the college admissions process.

Inclusivity

FIRST Robotics is a global community that prepares young girls and boys for the future. Key to our strategic intent is serving every student, everywhere. This commitment includes promoting and engaging in initiatives that ensure a welcoming community for all participants. These include students, adult mentors, coaches, and volunteers. In addition to having teams from the US compete for the #1 spot, teams from all over the world are coming to the US to win. As of today, 114 foreign countries have the FIRST presence. This means that in all of those countries, they all have at least one robotics tournament. FIRST also does a good job at involving not just the kids but also parents, mentors (coaches), and the community. Another important aspect of inclusivity that FIRST implements into the competitions is to encourage and implement initiatives that involve traditionally underrepresented, underserved, and vulnerable groups. These include, but are not limited to, those who identify as Black, Indigenous, economically disadvantaged, Girls, women, 2SLGBTQI, and new immigrantsand people with disabilities or receiving special education. Because of all the inclusivity, there are many opportunities for these groups to become leaders in their communities.

FIRST is really good at promoting and exercising the idea of both inclusivity and building leaders in their teams. Because of this, it opens up social and leadership opportunities for all kinds of groups of people. As well as including different groups in the US, they allow all kinds of people to participate in FIRST robotics in other countries. The program emphasizes values like teamwork, respect, and gracious professionalism, encouraging participants to support one another and celebrate each other’s successes. FIRST not only helps them develop technical skills but also builds their confidence, communication abilities, and capacity to lead. This approach ensures that participants are not only prepared to excel in STEM fields but also to use these experiences to become active people in their communities
